![]() ![]() So-called “walking simulators” are the offspring of point-and-click adventures and interactive fiction. Because this is a first-person adventure story, the drama opens up during conversations, not combat the tension strings itself along leisurely hikes, not spawn points and you look over your shoulder because this is a thriller, not a shooting gallery. Yet we’ll only get so far if we discuss gameplay, game mechanics, yadda yadda. That means discussing the finer points of the narrative is a no no. Here’s where we tread a fine line between thoughtful game criticism and outright spoiler territory. Henry’s got a lot on his mind, and the wedding ring around his finger is starting to cut off his circulation. The great outdoors should give him some time to clear his head. Due to a series of unfortunate events, which play out in a minimalistic text adventure during the prologue, Henry takes on a summer job manning a fire lookout tower. ![]() This game provides emotional choices, even though they may seem small and insignificant, they actually give you a good picture of characters, and every time you play you may with different personality. You are Henry. Oh, and I would rather go here with books comparison rather than tv shows. In both case that pretty much mean the only one thing - they care. People tell good things about the game, people tell bad things about the game. Yeah, the plot is different and may not be the epic story to tell, but virtualbill explained it quite well here, the story works, and works well. The only thing I use tv for is The Walking Dead series, which kept going so violent that I can hardly enjoy it.įirewatch gave me the best gaming experience for the past few years and I enjoyed it so much. And frankly, how much did I miss? I used to watch Nat Geo WIld and some scince stuff, but don't have time and desire any longer. But they are completely meaningless, as is everything else that you do in the game. It's a shame because the presentation was pretty good for an indie game, and it had me excited at first when it had me making various choices like a text adventure. ![]() The only thing the game really has is a story, and it just isn't a good one or an interesting one. The dialogue is well acted, but it isn't interesting. It is short, it is boring, it has a very weak story, it has virtually no gameplay at all, and it has a lot of boring pointless repetition - running back and forth along the same few trails and collecting a lot of virtual junk that has absolutely zero use. I completed the entire game in one sitting, something like 4 hours or so. That is the only way I can explain all the good reviews. So when a game does something a bit different and presents itself as a thoughtful and meaningful experience with a story and some twinkly music, modern gamers go crazy for it because they just don't have any frame of reference. They don't watch TV anymore so haven't seen any good dramas or even melodramas, they are too busy texting in movies and only watch things like Transformers anyway, and music is obviously terrible now. My conclusion is that modern gamers are so starved of culture that they will give something like this a good review. ![]()
